The Texas State Board of Education recently passed a preliminary vote to include Bible-based teachings in the public school curriculum, with the final vote scheduled for Friday. If approved, the new law would allow Bible lessons, including the Golden Rule and stories from books like Genesis, to be taught to students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
In Texas, students currently have a “moment of silence” in classrooms, which allows them to pray, reflect, meditate, or engage in any quiet activity without disrupting others. This time is seen as inclusive, as it respects various religious and cultural backgrounds.
Rabbi Naftoli Schmukler of Chabad Coastal Bend praised this practice for its versatility, noting that it allows people of all faiths to participate. While a proposed law to incorporate Bible-based teachings in public schools could lead to curriculum changes, it would be optional for schools and come with financial incentives. Schmukler emphasized the importance of teaching respect and peace, alongside academic subjects, for a successful society.
