Back to School: Lagos Fixes September 14 Resumption, Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar

The Lagos State Government has released the 2026/2027 Harmonised Academic Calendar for public and private primary and secondary schools, reaffirming its commitment to creating a structured learning environment that supports children’s right to education and development.

The approved calendar sets Monday, September 14, 2026, as the resumption date for the new academic session, with schools expected to complete 182 learning days across three terms.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, said the calendar was finalised after consultations with education stakeholders through the Office of Education Quality Assurance.

He noted that the harmonised schedule would promote better planning, improve learning outcomes and ensure consistency across schools.

According to the calendar, the first term will run from September 14 to December 21, 2026, while the second and third terms will commence in January and May 2027 respectively.

The state government also included provisions for staff professional development, open days and mid-term breaks, recognising the importance of supporting both teachers and learners in the education process.

Education stakeholders have continued to emphasise that access to quality and organised schooling is essential to helping children develop their skills, talents and future opportunities.

The government urged schools to comply with the approved calendar, stressing that effective planning and quality teaching remain important steps towards protecting and promoting every child’s right to education.
