A resident of Ushafa Community in Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, was shot dead by bandits who invaded his home on Thursday night. The attackers also kidnapped his wife and children. This incident is part of the broader security issues affecting various communities in Nigeria.

SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer in FCT, could not be reached for comment. This incident follows a report by SBM Intelligence revealing that Nigerians paid N1.048 billion in ransoms from July 2023 to June 2024. The report, titled ‘Grim Reaping,’ highlights that the FCT has the highest ransom demands in Nigeria, with Lagos and Kaduna following closely.

The report highlights the worsening security situation in Nigeria, particularly the rise in kidnapping for ransom. Although abductors demanded N11 billion in ransoms between July 2023 and June 2024, only N1.048 billion was paid. Economic stagnation is cited as a factor contributing to the increase in kidnappings, with criminals targeting a wider range of victims and initially demanding high ransoms before negotiating to amounts that families or organizations can afford.
