How 46 Borno Students Escaped ISWAP Abduction Attempt
The rescue of 46 students from an overnight attack at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, Borno State, has brought fresh concerns to the safety of children in conflict-affected communities.
The North-East Joint Task Force (NEJTF), Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), reported that Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists allegedly broke into the school premises in the early hours of July 19, triggering a response from the troops and Nigeria Police Mobile Force (NPMF).
The military said the attackers tried to kidnap students but were met by security officials, who compelled them to retreat. All 46 students were rescued and brought to Kinnasara Barracks, Monguno for medical evaluation and treatment.
But the military said some of the students were killed when they were hit by “scattered gunfire” during the confrontation, underscoring the ongoing dangers children face in areas of armed conflict.
The incident has reignited calls for enhanced child protection measures, such as better security around learning spaces, early warning systems, and collaborative action to ensure that children can learn without fear.
Although no student was abducted in the attack, it is a reminder of the ongoing threat to schools in Borno State and the need to prioritise the safety, protection and wellbeing of children in vulnerable communities.
