A California classroom aide, Shannon Bungatto, is facing accusations of slapping an 11-year-old student with special needs in the face, as detailed in a lawsuit filed last week. The incident allegedly took place in September 2023 at Foulks Ranch Elementary School in Elk Grove.

According to the lawsuit, the student, who has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), broke his pencil in frustration and went to tape it back together. Bungatto attempted to restrain him improperly, leading the student to verbally protest. At that point, she allegedly slapped him. The lawsuit claims no other staff intervened, the student did not receive immediate medical attention, and his parents were not notified of the incident, violating district policy.

Furthermore, EGUSD employees reportedly later admitted to the student’s parents that the incident was intentionally ignored. The lawsuit asserts that the student suffered “severe physical injury and emotional distress” due to Bungatto’s actions, alleging that EGUSD failed to provide proper training for restraining students with special needs. The district has not commented on the situation, and Bungatto’s employment status is unclear.
