Nigeria Writer, Charles Ogbu Calls for State of Emergency on Child Abuse After Recent Incident in Abia

A Nigerian child rights advocate has called for a national state of emergency on child abuse following a disturbing incident in Abia State that has sparked widespread public outrage and renewed concern over child protection failures.

The advocate, Charles Ogbu, founder of the Leave No One Behind Rural Care Initiative, made the appeal in a Facebook post on Monday after a viral video allegedly showed a woman violently assaulting a young girl and attempting to cut her throat with a knife at IBB Estate, Umuahia.

In the footage, the child is seen crying, pleading for help, and shielding her neck as the woman allegedly threatens her with a knife. The video has triggered shock across social media, with many Nigerians demanding immediate intervention and prosecution.

Ogbu described the incident as an attempted murder and urged authorities to treat it as a serious child safeguarding breach. He called on government institutions to move beyond condemnation and implement stronger protection mechanisms for children exposed to violence in homes and communities.

He also stated that the video had been forwarded to state authorities, who reportedly assured him that swift action would be taken.

Child protection advocates say the case highlights ongoing gaps in Nigeria’s response system for abused children, particularly in domestic and community settings where early warning signs are often ignored or unreported.

The incident has reignited calls for stronger enforcement of child protection laws, improved reporting systems, and rapid response units capable of intervening in cases of suspected abuse.

As investigations continue, stakeholders stress that the case must serve as a turning point in how child abuse is addressed, with a focus on prevention, accountability, and safeguarding vulnerable children from further harm.
