Edo Government Orders Investigation Into Students’ Collapse During Edo Children’s Day Event

The Edo State Government has launched an investigation into the Children’s Day incident at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, where several students reportedly collapsed after tear gas was discharged during the event.

The incident happened during Wednesday’s Children’s Day celebration, which attracted thousands of pupils from schools across the state. As the crowd grew larger, confusion reportedly broke out near one of the stadium entrances.

According to the government, some students became unruly while trying to gain access to the venue. The situation quickly turned chaotic and created a stampede-like scene.

In an attempt to control the crowd, a security operative reportedly discharged tear gas. Panic spread across the area almost immediately. Several students inhaled the substance, while others sustained minor injuries as people rushed for safety.

Emergency responders and medical officials quickly attended to the affected children. Some students received first aid treatment inside the stadium. Others were taken to the Edo Specialist Hospital for further medical care.

Authorities later confirmed that the affected students had reunited safely with their families after treatment.

Meanwhile, Governor Monday Okpebholo’s spokesperson, Patrick Ebojele, said the government had already ordered an investigation into the incident. He also confirmed that the bouncer involved is currently being questioned by the police.

The government, however, criticized some reports circulating online and described them as misleading.

“We hereby reject the sensational interpretations, spins, twists and misinformation that were dubiously orchestrated to give the government a bad name,” the statement said.

In addition, officials praised the quick intervention of Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, who reportedly assisted injured students during the emergency response at the stadium.

The incident has continued to raise concerns among parents and child protection advocates. Many believe events involving children should have stronger safety measures and better crowd control systems.

Safeguarding experts also warn against the use of tear gas in crowded spaces filled with children. They say such actions can trigger panic, breathing problems, emotional trauma, and avoidable injuries.

Although the affected students have recovered, the incident has renewed calls for stricter child safety policies at public events organized for children.
