Expert Warns Africa Is Failing Children by Neglecting Early Years Education

An early childhood education advocate has called on African governments and policymakers to prioritise early childhood education, describing it as essential to protecting every child’s right to development and unlocking their full potential.

Caroline Popoola, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Alpha Chains Limited, said the earliest years of a child’s life are critical for cognitive, emotional and social development, yet they often receive inadequate attention in education reforms across the continent.

According to Popoola, waiting until children enter primary or secondary school to focus on learning outcomes means missing the most important stage of development. She stressed that quality early childhood education lays the foundation for lifelong learning, wellbeing and future success.

She noted that investing in young children benefits not only individual children but also strengthens communities and contributes to long-term social and economic development. Popoola described quality early education as a life-changing intervention that extends far beyond childcare.

The education advocate also urged leaders to build sustainable systems that support educators and ensure consistent delivery of quality early learning programmes. She said strong institutions are necessary to expand access to early childhood education across Africa.

Over the past five years, Popoola has supported initiatives focused on educator training and leadership development. She urged governments, education stakeholders and development partners to place children’s right to development at the centre of education policies, ensuring every child has access to quality early learning opportunities from the earliest years.
