Federal Government Denies Ordering Schools to Close Nationwide

The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that all schools across Nigeria have been directed to shut down on November 24, 2025.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry described the report as false, misleading, and not traceable to any authorised source. According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Folasade Boriowo, no such directive was issued by the Federal Government, the Ministry, any State Ministry of Education, or any recognised security agency.

The Ministry urged the public to rely solely on verified information from official government channels, cautioning that unverified advisories should not be shared to prevent the spread of misinformation.

This clarification comes after the Federal Government ordered the temporary closure of 41 federal secondary schools in high-risk areas following repeated abductions in Niger and Kebbi States. Several states, including Kwara, Plateau, Katsina, and Niger, have also shut down some schools, while Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has directed the immediate deboarding of public and private school students due to rising insecurity.

Every child has the right to education and to safety within learning spaces. This includes the obligation of the state to protect children from harm, ensure secure learning environments, and take measures that prevent disruptions to their schooling while safeguarding their well-being.
