FG Moves to Strengthen Child Safeguarding as Stakeholders Review National Protection Policies

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to strengthen child safeguarding systems across Nigeria. Stakeholders gathered in Abuja to review key national child protection and welfare policies.

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development organised the four-day meeting. It brought together state commissioners, development partners, and child-focused organisations. They reviewed and validated major policy documents on child protection.

These documents include Nigeria’s reports to the United Nations Child Rights Committee. They also cover the National Child Policy and related welfare frameworks.

At the opening session, Permanent Secretary Mrs. Esuabana Nko. Asanye stressed government commitment to protecting children. She said policies must translate into real services for families and communities.

In addition, she emphasised stronger coordination across states. She noted that child safeguarding remains central to national development goals. Strong systems, she added, will improve accountability and service delivery.

“The quality of our deliberations will determine the strength of our protection systems,” she said.

UNICEF Nigeria also called for stronger implementation of child protection policies. Mona Aika, Chief Child Protection Officer, said systems must reach communities where risks are highest. She warned that policies without action leave children exposed.

Meanwhile, Save the Children International urged greater investment in child welfare programmes. The group noted that many children still face violence, neglect, and poverty. It called for stronger links between policy and practice.

Similarly, SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria highlighted reforms in alternative care systems. It stressed that every child deserves a safe and stable family environment.

Overall, stakeholders agreed that the review marks an important step. It strengthens Nigeria’s child safeguarding framework and improves protection outcomes nationwide.
