FG Celebrates End of Oyo Teachers’ Strike, Renews Promise to Keep Schools Safe

The Federal Government has welcomed the suspension of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) strike in Oyo State, describing the decision as an important step toward restoring uninterrupted learning for thousands of children in public schools.

The industrial action, which disrupted academic activities for weeks, was triggered by security concerns following the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area. The strike ended after discussions involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Oyo State Government, and the leadership of the NUT at the national, zonal, and state levels.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the resolution reflects a shared commitment to placing the welfare, safety, and future of schoolchildren above all other interests. He noted that teachers have now returned to classrooms, allowing learners to continue their education.

The minister also commended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and leaders of the Nigeria Union of Teachers for resolving the dispute through dialogue, describing their collaboration as a positive example of stakeholder engagement.

While welcoming the reopening of schools, Alausa stressed that protecting children remains a priority. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to keeping schools open and safe despite ongoing security challenges.

According to him, the government will continue working with state governments, teachers’ unions, security agencies, and other stakeholders to strengthen school safety and ensure every child can learn in a secure environment.

For families affected by the abduction in Oyo State, however, the return to classrooms is only part of the solution. Child rights advocates continue to call for the safe return of the abducted teachers and learners, as well as stronger measures to prevent future attacks on schools across Nigeria.
