Ghana Court Jails Father 20 Years for Abusing Daughter, Another Man Gets 10 Years for Abusing 7-Year-Old Boy
A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for sexually abusing his teenage daughter for a prolonged period in the Upper West Region of Ghana.
Kwame Ti-Zaaekuu was found guilty of incest and threats of death by the Lawra Circuit Court after an investigation by the Lawra District Police. The case started after a complaint was made and investigators determined that the man had abused his 17-year-old daughter, a Junior High School student, authorities said.
The Ghana Police Service said the child was allegedly threatened with death by her father to keep her quiet about the abuse.
His Honour Stanley Adjei presiding over the court, after a full trial on July 24, 2026, found Ti-Zaaekuu guilty of both charges. He was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for incest and 10 years for threatening to kill, to run concurrently.
The court also ordered the Department of Social Welfare in Lawra to offer counselling and psychosocial support to the affected child as part of the measures to support her recovery and wellbeing.
The Ghana Police Service noted that the conviction highlights the need for people to report child sexual abuse, improve child protection systems and ensure that child sexual abusers are held accountable.
Child protection workers stress the need for children to have safe places to report abuse without fear of intimidation, particularly if the person causing the abuse is someone they depend on or trust.
The Upper West Regional Police Command reiterated its resolve to protect children and vulnerable persons and ensure that offences committed against them in relation to child sexual abuse and domestic violence are met with due process of law.
