Introduction
Richard Jackson, a 100-year-old veteran residing in Townshend, Vermont, was honored with France’s most prestigious award, the Legion d’Honneur, on Wednesday for his remarkable service in the army during World War II. Jackson served in the 100th Infantry Division, famously known as the “Sons of Bitche,” which played a crucial role in liberating the fortified town of Bitche and its surrounding villages in France during the war.
Overview
- Jackson’s humility shone through as he remarked, “I’m just one person. I represent my company, which also got presidential citations. So it’s much bigger than what I did.”
- The journey to Jackson’s recognition involved the heartfelt efforts of a local seventh grader, Karsten Olsen.
- Olsen, a dual citizen whose grandparents lived in one of the villages liberated by Jackson and his division, wrote a letter in French to the French consulate general, advocating for Jackson to receive the prestigious honor.
- Olsen expressed, “I decided to write this letter because, at my school, it’s really important to give back to the community and community service. I thought this would be a great opportunity to show that since he is a World War II veteran and he fought in the same town that my mom was born in France. So it’s really special to me.”
- Jackson, already decorated with two bronze stars by the U.S. Army, received further recognition from the French government for his valor.
