Since Usain Bolt’s retirement in 2017, Jamaica has struggled to find a sprinter comparable to him. Team USA has dominated the 100m and 200m sprints at World Championships, winning gold in all but one event since 2017 (the 200m in 2017, won by Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev). The U.S. is favored to win gold in both sprints at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with Noah Lyles emerging as a leading figure in the sport.
Team USA’s resurgence in track and field may frustrate Jamaican fans who hoped to overcome American dominance with Usain Bolt’s legacy. However, 16-year-old Jamaican Nickecoy Bramwell could be a promising new talent, as he recently broke one of Bolt’s long-standing records from over 20 years ago.
Nickecoy Bramwell, born in 2008, broke Usain Bolt’s under-17 400m record by running a time of 47.26 seconds at the 51st Carifta Games in Grenada. Nickecoy Bramwell, despite battling injuries, broke Usain Bolt’s 22-year-old under-17 400m record with a time of 47.26 seconds at the Carifta Games. He narrowly surpassed Bolt’s record by 0.07 seconds and finished significantly ahead of his competitors. Bramwell expressed his excitement about achieving the record, noting his focus and anticipation for future improvements.
Nickecoy Bramwell is a promising talent as he looks ahead to the U20 World Championships later this year. Although he has impressive times in the 100m (10.94 seconds) and 200m (21.45 seconds), he would need to develop further to match or challenge Usain Bolt’s world records in these events. If Bramwell continues on his current path, he could become a strong competitor by the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
