Katsina: Bandit Attack Kills Pregnant Woman, Endangering Unborn Child

Nine people, including a pregnant woman and a local forest guard, were killed in a bandit attack in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State. The incident has raised urgent child protection and safeguarding concerns, especially for the unborn child of the expectant mother.
The attack occurred on Sunday evening in Gidan Wawo community, Guga Ward. Eyewitnesses said armed men stormed the village and opened fire, forcing residents to run for safety.
Among the dead was a pregnant woman. Her death has deepened concern among health and child protection experts. They warn that such violence not only claims lives but also endangers unborn children.
Five other people sustained injuries and are receiving treatment in hospital. Community members said the attackers came in large numbers and targeted anyone who tried to escape.
A lawmaker representing the area, Hon. Abdurrahman Kandarawa, confirmed the incident. He said the victims were buried on Monday. He also noted that the attackers were not linked to groups in a local peace agreement.
Health experts describe the incident as a double tragedy. They say it affects both the mother and the unborn child. According to them, such cases highlight the hidden impact of armed violence on maternal health.
Child protection advocates also warn that repeated attacks put women and children at greater risk. They say exposure to violence and poor access to healthcare can worsen outcomes for pregnant women.
The attack has left residents in fear. Many parents now worry about the safety of women and children in future incidents.
Community leaders are calling for stronger security in vulnerable areas. They say urgent action is needed to prevent further loss of life.
Security agencies have yet to issue an official response. Meanwhile, residents continue to seek protection for women, children, and other vulnerable groups in rural communities.
