13-Year Jail Term, Public Flogging for Man Convicted of Child Sexual Abuse in Niger
A man convicted of child sexual abuse involving his neighbour’s 10-year-old daughter has been sentenced to 13 years in prison and ordered to pay N250,000 in compensation to the affected child in Niger State.
The man, identified as Aliyu Bala, was convicted at a magistrate’s court in Minna. Following the judgment, authorities also publicly flogged him with 20 strokes at the Hakimi Palace in Bosso, in the presence of community members.
The Director-General of the Niger State Child Rights Agency, Ummul-Kalthume Muhammad, described the judgment as an important step towards strengthening accountability for offences against children.
She said the public enforcement was intended to demonstrate that authorities would not tolerate child sexual abuse or allow offenders to evade justice.
Muhammad also urged communities to stop shielding people accused of abusing children and instead report suspected cases to the appropriate authorities.
A representative of the Niger State Ministry of Justice, Shafa, described the judgment as significant for child protection and encouraged members of the public to report suspected abuse.
The case also highlighted the pressures families can face when seeking justice for children. According to officials, the affected child’s mother initially considered withdrawing the case because of pressure from relatives and community members. She later allowed the legal process to continue after recognising the importance of accountability and protecting her child’s rights.
The Hakimi of Bosso, Muazu Adamu Laka, said the judgment was the first of its kind he had witnessed in Minna and expressed hope that it would deter others from abusing children.
The case underscores the importance of community support, accessible justice and effective reporting systems in protecting children from sexual abuse.
