NDLEA Raises Alarm Over “Candy-Style” Drug Sachets Targeting Children After ₦5.8bn Lagos Bust

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a strong warning to parents and guardians after uncovering illicit drugs worth over ₦5.8bn hidden in a mansion in Lekki, Lagos, reportedly used as a stash house for narcotics packaged in colourful designer sachets.

The agency said the packaging was deliberately designed to look like sweets and snacks, raising serious child protection and safeguarding concerns over efforts to lure children and young people into drug use.

NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the development in a statement shared on X, noting that operatives recovered the substances during a weekend operation at the property.

According to him, the drugs were concealed in attractive sachets that could easily be mistaken for harmless consumables, increasing the risk of exposure among children and teenagers.

“These items were recovered from a mansion used as a stash house in Lekki, Lagos, where over ₦5.8bn worth of illicit drugs were seized,” Babafemi said.

He warned parents to pay close attention to suspicious sachets or unfamiliar packaged items found in homes, waste bins, or school bags, stressing the importance of early detection.

“In case you see anything like this in your wastebasket at home, seek help for your young ones immediately,” he added.

From a child protection perspective, experts say the trend reflects a growing safeguarding threat, where drug traffickers are increasingly adopting child-friendly packaging to disguise illicit substances and make them more appealing.

They warn that this tactic significantly increases the risk of accidental exposure and intentional experimentation among children and adolescents.

Child safety advocates are now calling for stronger parental awareness, improved school-based drug education, and closer monitoring of packaging methods used by drug networks to better protect children from targeted substance abuse.
