Nigerian Students Win Gold at 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China
Four Nigerian children have brought the country joy after taking the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China.
The win is a remarkable achievement for the young spellers, who worked hard, had talent and perseverance to bring Nigeria its first gold medal in the global competition.
Some of the best performers included Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin who also came home with medals for their outstanding performances. The school announced their achievement on Sunday, calling it a proud moment for the school and the country.
The winners were also Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti (2026 African Spelling Bee Junior champion) and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba.
The children went on to win the Nigeria Spelling Bee and progressed through the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, before making it to the international stage, thus proving that sustained investment in children’s education and talent development can lead to success on the world stage.
Their success is a testament to the boundless potential of Nigerian children when provided opportunities to learn, compete and excel. The young medal winners are not only bringing home the medals but also serving as role models for other children who are working hard to achieve success in their own lives, with confidence and determination.
