One-Year-Old Child Dies After Police Shooting Outside Walmart, Sparking Outrage, Protests
A one-year-old child, Kohen Wiley, has been killed in a police shooting outside a Walmart in Senatobia, Mississippi, sparking public outrage and renewed concerns over the protection of children during law enforcement operations.
The incident occurred on Sunday when police officers responded to a report of an alleged shoplifting attempt involving a box of diapers. During the response, an officer fired at a vehicle as it was leaving the area, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
Kohen, who was inside the vehicle at the time, was taken to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead. Another person in the vehicle was reported to be in critical condition.
The child’s death has sparked public protests, with residents demanding answers and greater accountability from authorities. Demonstrators gathered outside Senatobia city hall and Walmart, calling for transparency and the release of police body camera footage and surveillance video from the scene.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the shooting, while the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave. Authorities have stated that the investigation must be completed before video evidence is released.
