Oriire School Abduction: Oyo Government Says Life Sentence Is Not Enough for Those Who Put Children at Risk
The Oyo State Government has said that the life sentence imposed on three persons found guilty of the abduction of Oriire school pupils is inadequate, noting that the sentence does not adequately reflect the damage done to the abducted pupils, teachers, families and the community.
The three were convicted by the Federal High Court in Abuja over the failure to disclose information about the kidnappers of school children and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Oyo State, said the judgment was “cold comfort” because individuals who help criminals by providing information on abductions are also responsible for the dangers children and school communities face.
The case also illustrates the broader implications of school abductions from a child protection point of view, as the incident was not the only one. These attacks can have a negative impact on children’s emotional health, interfere with school attendance and instill fear in families and communities.
The state government opposed the sentence, but it stated that it would abide by the court’s ruling and would not challenge the ruling. It also urged more stringent legislation, more speedy prosecution and better enforcement of the law to combat crimes endangering children.
Oyelade said the government has been making efforts to beef up security in schools through collaboration with security agencies and the Oyo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps). He also said that the intelligence gathering and the quick response systems have been enhanced to minimize risks near schools.
The government also denied that it had left the affected children and their families behind, saying that help had been provided since the children and teachers were released.
The case has reignited the debate for better child protection measures, such as safer schools, community engagement and child protection systems that will prevent children from being abducted and subjected to other forms of violence.
