Orphaned Children, Aged 5–9, Abducted in Deadly Sokoto Bandit Attack

Concerns over child safety have deepened in Sokoto State after three orphaned children were among those abducted during a bandit attack on Tarah village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area.
A local resident, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said the attackers specifically took children aged between 5 and 9 years during the late-night raid. He explained that the three orphaned children had already lost their father before the incident.
The source also confirmed that two additional children from the same family, identified as children of Hami Tela, were abducted during the attack. The incident has left affected families in severe emotional distress and uncertainty.
The attack occurred on Tuesday night when suspected bandits invaded the community under heavy rainfall, using the poor weather conditions to their advantage. Residents said the attackers moved from house to house, breaking doors and forcing entry into homes.
Some villagers noted that many homes were already empty due to repeated insecurity in the area. However, the attackers still succeeded in abducting residents, including children, from the remaining occupied houses.
Community members said the abduction of orphaned and young children highlights the growing vulnerability of children in rural communities affected by recurring bandit attacks.
They described the situation as heartbreaking, adding that families are struggling to cope with the trauma and uncertainty surrounding the missing children.
Security authorities are yet to provide a detailed response as investigations into the wider attacks in Sabon Birni and Wurno continue.
