Oyo Shuts Schools as Abduction Crisis Intensifies

Authorities in Oyo State have ordered the temporary closure of schools in Oriire Local Government Area following the abduction of a principal and several students in Ahoro-Esinle. The decision has raised fresh child protection and safeguarding concerns across affected communities.
The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) directed the shutdown after gunmen attacked schools in the area on Friday morning. The board said the move is aimed at preventing further harm to children while security operations continue.
Reports indicate that the attackers struck between 8am and 9am at Community High School and LA School in Ahoro-Esinle. A teacher was killed during the incident, while several students were abducted.
The exact number of abducted children is still being verified as security agencies continue search and rescue operations.
OYOSUBEB Chairman, Nureni Adeniran, described the incident as a painful moment for the state’s education sector. He said the safety of children remains the top priority of the government.
Security agencies have deployed tactical teams to the affected area. Intelligence operations are ongoing to locate the abducted students and restore calm in the communities.
From a child protection perspective, the attack highlights the growing risks children face in school environments, especially in rural areas. Experts warn that such incidents disrupt learning and expose children to trauma, fear, and long-term psychological harm.
Child rights advocates say school closures, while necessary in emergencies, also interrupt education and stability for children. They stress the need for stronger preventive measures to ensure schools remain safe spaces.
Parents in the affected communities have expressed fear and uncertainty. Many say they are now keeping their children at home until security improves.
Authorities have urged calm and asked residents to avoid spreading unverified information. They also assured that efforts are ongoing to secure the safe return of the abducted students and restore normal school activities.
