Police Rescue Newborn Baby in Anambra After Alleged Attempt to Sell Infant

A newborn baby girl has been rescued in Anambra State after police officers reportedly stopped an alleged attempt to sell the child in Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area. The intervention followed information from a concerned citizen, leading operatives of the Anambra State Police Command to locate the 21-year-old mother and her infant.

According to the police, officers attached to the Oyi Divisional Station acted on credible intelligence on June 19 and secured the baby, ensuring that both the mother and child received protection and support. The command said the pair were later reunited with the woman’s family to provide care and supervision while investigations continue.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said preliminary findings showed that the young mother had concealed her pregnancy and delivery from her parents before leaving her home in Imo State to stay with a friend in Igbariam.

The case has renewed concerns about the protection of newborns and vulnerable children from exploitation, trafficking, and neglect. Child protection advocates have often stressed the need for early intervention, community awareness, and support systems for young parents facing difficult circumstances.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, commended the resident who reported the incident, noting that timely information helped prevent possible harm to the child.

The police assured the public that further investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the case and ensure anyone found responsible faces appropriate legal action. The command also urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities involving children to help strengthen community child protection efforts.
