Pressure Mounts on Government as NANS Backs Labour Unions Over Abducted Schoolchildren Crisis

Growing concerns over the safety of schoolchildren have intensified as student and labour unions increase pressure on authorities to secure the release of abducted students and teachers across Nigeria.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has pledged support for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in their ongoing calls for urgent government intervention. The groups are demanding swift action to rescue those taken during recent attacks on schools.
NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, said the protection of students and teachers must remain central to national priorities. He warned that persistent insecurity in learning environments threatens access to education and endangers children’s future.
Child protection specialists note that repeated school-related abductions expose children to serious risks. These include emotional trauma, disrupted education, and long-term psychological consequences that can affect development.
In several affected communities, families continue to wait for updates on abducted students and teachers. The uncertainty has deepened anxiety and raised broader questions about the safety of educational institutions.
NANS stated that it would sustain advocacy efforts alongside labour unions and other stakeholders until the safe return of all abducted persons is achieved. The association also called for stronger coordination between government agencies, security forces, and community structures.
Furthermore, the group urged authorities to treat school protection as an urgent child safeguarding responsibility rather than a political issue. It stressed that learning environments must remain safe and accessible for all children.
Stakeholders continue to emphasize that every child has the right to education without fear. They argue that protecting schools is essential to safeguarding both lives and the future of education in the country.
