Rivers Police Arrest Man Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of Two Children in Eleme
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man over allegations of sexual abuse involving two children aged 11 and 13 in Ogale, Eleme Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect, identified as Godwin, was arrested by operatives of the Eleme Police Division after the parents of the affected children reported the allegations to the authorities.
According to the complaint submitted by the parents, the suspect allegedly gained access to the children by sending them on errands before inviting them into his room. The father of the 13-year-old alleged that the suspect would lock the door and threaten the children against speaking about the incidents.
Following the complaint, police operatives arrested the suspect at his residence, and an investigation has commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, confirmed the arrest and said the investigation was ongoing.
Child protection advocates say allegations of sexual abuse against children require swift, sensitive and child-centred responses that prioritise the safety, dignity and emotional wellbeing of affected children throughout the justice process.
Experts also emphasise the importance of creating safe environments where children can report concerns without fear, while parents, caregivers and communities remain alert to signs of possible exploitation or abuse.
Authorities are expected to interview the children, their parents and other relevant witnesses as part of the investigation. The identities of the affected children have been withheld to protect their privacy in line with child safeguarding practices.
The case highlights the continued need for stronger child protection systems, community awareness and early reporting mechanisms to prevent abuse and ensure children receive the protection and support they deserve.
