February 21 2024- In Sudan’s northern Darfur, Zamzam camp is witnessing the death of thirteen children daily due to severe malnutrition, a consequence of the 10-month war in the country, according to a statement from the medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The camp, originally established in 2003 for those fleeing ethnically targeted violence, now houses over 300,000 people. Since the outbreak of war between Sudan’s military and paramilitary forces in April 2023, the camp residents have been deprived of essential humanitarian aid and medical care, leading to the critical health situation. Claire Nicolet, the head of emergency response in Sudan for MSF, emphasizes the urgent need for treatment to prevent further deaths among those with severe malnutrition. Meanwhile, the head of the U.N. refugee agency warns of a potential increase in Sudanese refugees in Europe if a cease-fire agreement is not signed soon and relief efforts are not strengthened.
