A new Pew Research Center report reveals that the proportion of American adults under 50 unlikely to have children increased by 10 percentage points from 2019 to 2023. Over half of these individuals cited a lack of desire for children as a major reason. The report also notes that nearly half of Americans believe the trend of fewer people having children could negatively impact the country, with men, older individuals, Republicans, and those with higher incomes more likely to hold this view. The report suggests that policies like free child care and paid family leave could significantly encourage more people to have children. Currently, families spend about 24% of their income on child care, averaging over $18,000 annually, according to a recent survey by Care.com.
