Every Generation Is the Anxious Generation

Despite global improvements in life expectancy, education, and health, today’s teenagers face unprecedented levels of anxiety. Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt has termed Gen Z and younger generations as “the anxious generation,” linking their mental health issues to the rise of smartphones and social media. While there is concern about the negative impacts of these technologies, historical parallels suggest that similar fears have arisen with past innovations, such as trains, radios, and cars. As a mindfulness director and parent, the author encourages a balanced perspective, noting that such technological anxieties are not new and have been experienced with other advancements.
