Below are the steps for participating in Chicago’s Local School Council elections.

< 1 min read

Chicago is holding local school council elections this week, a unique electoral process open to all city residents. Voting takes place at all Chicago public schools, with elementary schools hosting elections on April 10 and high schools on April 11. Local School Councils, established in 1988, play a significant role in school governance, focusing on budget approval, school improvement plans, and principal selection. However, recent years have seen declining candidate numbers and persistent vacancies in LSCs, despite a rebound in voter turnout. Eligible voters include residents within a school’s attendance boundary, parents, guardians, students, and staff members. Identification is required, and ballots must be marked with an X next to the chosen candidates’ names.
