The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has indefinitely closed its academic activities following student protests. The shutdown, announced by the university’s Public Relations Officer Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, is attributed to the students’ refusal to compromise on their demands. The protests began due to prolonged power outages on campus, which disrupted students’ preparations for upcoming exams. Additionally, students protested against increased transport fares by the university’s shuttle service. The power outage stemmed from a dispute with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) over electricity billing, leading the university to rely on generators and ration power across its campuses and hostels.
