Chicago to Change how it Flags Disruptive Behaviors for its Youngest Students

< 1 min read

Chicago Public Schools is planning significant changes to how it handles disruptive behavior among pre-K through second-grade students. The school board is set to approve new student code of conduct revisions that will only flag serious safety issues, such as bringing weapons to school. Letters to parents about incidents will no longer use stigmatizing language like “misconduct” or “violations,” aiming to better reflect the social-emotional development of young children. These adjustments are part of a broader shift towards less punitive disciplinary measures, building on a decade-long effort to eliminate suspensions for young students.
