The East Baton Rouge School Board faced challenges in appointing a new superintendent after both finalists, Andrea Zayas and Kevin George, withdrew from consideration. Andrea Zayas cited unfavorable conditions for success in the district as her reason for withdrawing. Despite strong community support, interim Superintendent Adam Smith was not selected as a finalist. Four board members released a statement criticizing Smith’s candidacy, citing concerns over his vision and leadership style. Smith has served as interim superintendent multiple times since January 2024. A motion to appoint Smith as superintendent for 90 days failed during a recent meeting, which did not result in a decision on the district’s next leader. The board must reach a decision before the July 23 deadline.
