Florida Brings Back Cursive: Students Must Master Handwriting to Advance Under New Law

Florida public school pupils in Years 3 to 5 will be required to learn and demonstrate proficiency in cursive handwriting from the 2026–2027 school year, following the implementation of a new state law. The measure, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, requires pupils to master cursive letter formation, spacing and sentence writing, with fifth graders expected to read and write fluently in cursive for essays, classroom assignments and other literacy activities.
