Millions of children around the world are still being denied the opportunity to develop essential reading skills as countries mark International Literacy Day on September 8. The 2026 celebration marks the 60th anniversary of the global observance, which was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966 to highlight literacy as a fundamental human right and an important foundation for education and development.
