Johnson’s Chief of Staff on the CPS Budget Fight, Mayor’s Vision for Chicago Schools

All seven members of the Chicago Board of Education announced their intention to resign last Friday, leading Mayor Brandon Johnson to appoint six new members. Tensions are escalating between Johnson and CPS CEO Pedro Martinez, whom the mayor reportedly wants to oust. The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is facing a financial crisis, with differing solutions proposed by the mayor, the CEO, and the Chicago Teachers Union. Cristina Pacione-Zayas, Johnson’s chief of staff, discussed the city’s efforts to address funding issues on “Chicago Tonight.” She explained that the mayor’s office is collaborating closely with the governor’s financial team to tackle structural problems, including the expiration of COVID-related funding and revenue losses linked to tax policy changes.
