Kids Count report: Michigan’s Education Rank Drops Amid Chronic Absenteeism, Falling Test Scores

The 2024 Kids Count Data Book from the Annie E. Casey Foundation reveals that Michigan’s overall ranking for child well-being has slipped, now placing 34th among states, down two spots from the previous year. The report analyzes 16 indicators across economic well-being, education, health, and family/community factors. Education is a significant concern, with Michigan ranking 41st in the nation, its lowest position yet, highlighting issues such as low preschool enrollment, low proficiency in reading and math among fourth and eighth graders.
