Lack of Sleep During Pregnancy Could Impact Baby’s Development, Study Reveals

< 1 min read

A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism emphasizes the critical role of sleep for pregnant women, revealing that inadequate sleep (defined as fewer than seven hours per night) can lead to neurodevelopmental delays in children. The study also noted that maternal sleep impacts fetal glucose metabolism, which may influence neurodevelopment. Neurodevelopmental delays can result in slower growth in social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, motor, and speech skills. In addition to neurodevelopmental issues, poor sleep during pregnancy has been associated with complications such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.
