Mother sues Whitley County Consolidated Schools over ‘unconstitutional’ recording policy

A mother with students in Whitley County Consolidated Schools has filed a lawsuit that claims district officials violated her rights in a situation from last year. Nicole Graves and the Goldwater Institute, a public policy organization, filed a complaint Tuesday in federal court against the school board and superintendent. The suit stems from a 2024 incident in which Graves’ middle school-age daughter said she witnessed a bus driver inappropriately interacting with students. Graves said she found out about it from her daughter later on – not from school officials, according to the lawsuit – and when she and her husband went to confront the principal, she recorded the conversation and posted a portion of it on social media.
