Mothers Shoulder the “Mental Load” of Housework – and it’s Impacting Their Well-Being

< 1 min read

Research published in the Archives of Women’s Mental Health highlights that mothers disproportionately shoulder the “mental load” of household tasks, which includes anticipating, planning, and organizing, in addition to performing physical chores. This cognitive burden, which involves remembering and managing various household needs, is significantly higher for mothers compared to their partners. The study found that mothers handle about 73% of the cognitive load and 64% of the physical labor. This imbalance contributes to higher levels of depression, stress, relationship dissatisfaction, and burnout among mothers.
