Researchers from Southern Illinois University have explored the impact of allowing brief “technology breaks” in college classrooms, aiming to reduce phone use and enhance performance. The study, published in Frontiers in Education, tested breaks lasting one, two, or four minutes, comparing them to control breaks where students asked questions but couldn’t use their phones. The findings indicated that technology breaks, particularly the one-minute version, significantly reduced phone use among students. During these sessions, students also achieved higher average test scores, surpassing 80%. The researchers suggest that short breaks might limit distractions, helping students stay focused during lectures.
