Principal Placed on Leave After Saying Swastikas can be Symbol of Peace

A principal at Phantom Lake Elementary School in Bellevue, Washington, is on administrative leave following backlash over her comments regarding a swastika found on a school wall. In an email to parents, the principal stated that the swastika could symbolize peace, not just hate, which angered many in the community. Parents expressed outrage, believing her remarks undermined the seriousness of the symbol’s association with hate, particularly given its Nazi connotation in this context. Initially, the principal labeled the swastika a “symbol of hate” and stated it was promptly removed. However, later communication emphasized the swastika’s historical significance in other cultures, which further fueled parent discontent. The Bellevue School District is currently investigating the incident.
