Schools Starts Monday with Nearly 150 Bus Routes Temporarily Suspended

< 1 min read

Hawaii is facing a severe school bus driver shortage, affecting nearly 150 routes across Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii Island. Recently, the Department of Education (DOE) suspended 108 routes, impacting about 3,000 students, with an additional 39 routes suspended on Maui, affecting 82 students. An emergency proclamation has been issued to relax bus and driver license regulations, but specific route impacts are still unclear. While some routes may restart in the second week of school, service will be restored gradually. Currently, the DOE needs 87 more drivers to fully staff routes, but 175 drivers have left in the past year, causing significant disruptions for families.
