A study conducted in Finland suggests that grandparents can significantly influence the mental health of mothers, particularly when their children are young. Analyzing data from over 488,000 mothers with children aged 12 or younger, researchers found that mothers are less likely to experience depression if their own parents are under 70, employed, and free of severe health issues. Additionally, proximity plays a role, with mothers living within 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) of their parents exhibiting lower rates of depression compared to those who live farther away. Notably, if a mother is contemplating separation from her partner, the support of grandparents appears to have a more substantial positive impact on her mental health compared to mothers who have already separated or those who remain with their partner.
