The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary), Senator Lawal Adamu Usman, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s alarming number of out-of-school children, estimated by UNESCO to be 7.6 million. Of this number, 3.9 million are girls at the primary and junior secondary levels.
He lamented that more than 50% of Nigerian girls do not attend school at the basic education level. “Regrettably, about one million girls drop out between the first and last year of primary school, while 600,000 drop out between Primary 6 and JSS1,” Senator Usman said.
