Shunned in computer age, cursive makes a comeback in California

< 1 min read

February 15 2024- In California, a new law, Assembly Bill 446, has reinstated cursive handwriting instruction for grade school students, responding to the decline of this skill in the computer age. The law, signed in October, mandates handwriting instruction for the 2.6 million students in grades one to six, approximately ages 6 to 12. Cursive lessons are specified for the “appropriate” grade levels, typically considered to be third grade and above. This move marks a shift toward traditional writing methods for a generation that initially learned to write on screens.
