TEACHER VOICE: Instead of Worrying About Whether Math is Easy or Difficult, let’s Make it Welcoming

< 1 min read

Mathematics education often focuses on gradually increasing problem difficulty, but this approach can obscure more fundamental goals of teaching. The prevailing assumption is that learning math involves solving progressively harder problems, with teachers adjusting the “difficulty dial” from easy to hard. However, this method can limit effective teaching. Instead of fixating on whether problems are “easy” or “difficult,” educators should aim to make math classes both welcoming and challenging. “Welcoming” means making students feel comfortable and capable in their learning environment, while “challenging” involves deepening their thinking and problem-solving skills. These qualities are not mutually exclusive and should be integrated into instruction.
