Teachers emphasize that the small portion of cases cannot be overlooked: Children who cause harm are returning to class following the enactment of the new suspension law

< 1 min read

Omaha Public Schools teachers are frustrated with a law that bans suspensions for students in pre-K through second grade. Supporters argue that the issue is not with the law itself but the way it is being implemented. The Nebraska Legislature passed the law in June 2023, but it has an exception: elementary schools can suspend students if they bring a deadly weapon to school. State Sen. Terrell McKinney proposed the statute that bans the suspensions, but he believes there is an issue with the way the new law is being implemented. The district does still discipline pre-K through second-grade students for physical or violent behavior. The OPS Board President sent a letter to the legislature’s education committee in support of another bill, LB 1146, which would allow schools to suspend young students if they engage in violent behavior that can cause physical harm to someone else.
