Bankrate analyzed 2022 American Community Survey data to rank the “most valuable college majors” based on unemployment rates, median annual income, and the share of graduates with advanced degrees. The analysis focused on bachelor’s degrees, identifying majors that lead to higher salaries and lower unemployment. The top nine majors had median salaries over $100,000, with petroleum engineering showing the lowest unemployment rate. Despite the value of some degrees, there’s a growing belief among younger people that a four-year college degree is less essential for well-paying jobs than it was two decades ago. Approximately 49% of adults surveyed by Pew Research Center feel this way. Nonetheless, Gailey emphasized that a bachelor’s degree generally offers long-term earnings benefits and suggested ways to reduce upfront costs, such as starting at a community college before transferring.
