Child Abduction

Swift Rescue of Adelabu’s Sister, Children Sparks Outrage as Other Abducted Children Remain in Captivity

The rescue of the sister of former Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, and her 12-year-old twin sons has sparked fresh debate about child protection in Nigeria. While many Nigerians welcomed the development, others questioned why some abduction cases appear to receive faster attention than others.

The Oyo State Police Command announced that the affected persons were rescued during an intelligence-led operation in the Ayegun area of Oluyole Local Government Area. Police arrested four suspected kidnappers and killed two others during a gun battle.

According to the police, the children and their mother were held in a secluded building allegedly used as a hideout by the kidnappers. The family was abducted on June 3 while the children were being taken to school.

Soon after news of the rescue broke, social media users began drawing comparisons with other abduction cases involving schoolchildren. Many pointed to pupils and teachers who have remained in captivity for weeks despite ongoing rescue efforts.

As a result, questions emerged about whether all abducted children receive the same level of urgency and attention. Some Nigerians argued that every child deserves an equal chance of being rescued, regardless of family background, influence, or public profile.

Child rights advocates say the discussion goes beyond a single case. They believe it highlights wider concerns about the protection of children facing security threats across the country.

Experts also warn that abduction can have lasting effects on children. Beyond the immediate danger, affected children may experience fear, anxiety, and emotional trauma long after their release. For this reason, specialists recommend counselling and other support services to help them recover.

Meanwhile, the incident has renewed calls for stronger child safeguarding measures. Advocates are urging authorities to improve security around schools, strengthen community surveillance, and respond quickly to reports of suspicious activities.

As investigations continue, many stakeholders insist that the focus should remain on protecting all children. They argue that every abduction case deserves the same commitment and urgency, because every child’s safety matters.
