Social Media Offers Opportunities Despite Risks, Teen Influencers Say
Teen influencers in the United Kingdom are expressing mixed feelings about the government’s planned ban on social media use for children under 16, warning it could limit creative opportunities for young people.
The policy, announced by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, is aimed at protecting children from harmful content, cyberbullying, addictive algorithms, and online predators. However, some young creators say it could unintentionally disrupt careers built through digital platforms.
Fifteen-year-old singer and dancer Ziame Stewart said social media has been central to his creative development. He explained that he uses platforms to share performances, connect with audiences, and promote his music. He fears the ban could restrict opportunities for emerging talent.
Other teen influencers shared similar views. Some noted that social media has helped them build confidence, earn income, and connect with supportive communities. One young content creator said the platforms also provide visibility that traditional media rarely offers.
However, many also acknowledged the risks. These include exposure to harmful comments, online pressure, and excessive screen time. Some parents supporting the ban say stricter rules are needed to protect children’s wellbeing.
The debate has highlighted a wider divide between safeguarding concerns and youth digital participation. While supporters of the policy argue it prioritises safety and mental health, critics believe it removes important spaces for expression and learning.
As discussions continue, young people are calling for more balanced solutions that improve online safety without excluding them from digital spaces where creativity and connection thrive.
